The Iraqi government has announced plans to construct 60 new urban communities across the country as part of a national effort to address the ongoing housing crisis.
According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has directed relevant authorities to develop fast, practical solutions and ensure effective planning to support service delivery in the upcoming cities.
During a recent meeting reviewing the work of the New Cities Implementation Authority, Al-Sudani stressed the need for strategic, long-term solutions to overcome the country’s housing shortage.
He noted that of the 60 planned cities, six have been prioritized for immediate development, while three others are set to receive implementation approval in the near term.
Al-Sudani also highlighted several key challenges that must be resolved to move the projects forward, including issues related to land allocation, real estate registration, property rights, and the establishment of essential infrastructure such as water, sewage, and other public services.
