Oman is ramping up the adoption of smart agriculture technologies as part of its efforts to strengthen food security and ensure sustainable resource use, in alignment with the goals of Vision 2040, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR).
Innovative practices such as hydroponics, smart irrigation systems, and drone technology are gradually being introduced across the country. While still in the early phases, these technologies are primarily being applied within research programs and private sector initiatives.
Badriya Saif al Hosni, Head of the Smart Agriculture Department at the Directorate General of Agriculture and Livestock Research, explained that the ministry’s strategy is focused on integrating technology into traditional farming systems.
“A key pillar of our strategy is the digital transformation of services and the adoption of advanced technologies to boost crop yields and lower production costs,” she said. “We are also committed to equipping farmers with smart agriculture tools to support this transition.”
