Iraq has officially launched the construction of Al-Ward Residential City, a large-scale housing project in Baghdad, announced by Minister of Construction, Housing, and Public Municipalities, Bangen Rekani.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Rekani emphasized that the project has been designed to meet modern living standards, with a focus on energy sustainability, environmental planning, and advanced insulation technologies, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The development will not only provide housing units but will also include extensive green spaces, public services, job opportunities, and recreational areas to enhance quality of life.
The initiative follows the 2024 agreement signed between Minister Rekani and Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris, CEO of ORA Developers. Al-Ward City—named after renowned Iraqi sociologist Ali Al-Wardi—is the largest of five planned residential developments and has been prioritized under Iraq’s national housing strategy.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) highlighted that the government’s broader plan aims to tackle the housing crisis by constructing fully equipped cities that offer diverse housing options for people across all income levels, easing the demographic pressure on Baghdad.
Located on the southeastern outskirts of the capital, the Al-Ward City project will span 61 million square meters and feature 120,000 housing units. It will integrate smart city technologies and sustainable urban planning, setting a benchmark for environmentally conscious development.
Naguib Sawiris noted that this partnership marks a major milestone in delivering innovative urban solutions that balance population needs with ecological responsibility.
