Iraq has launched two significant industrial projects in the southern port city of Basra, which Minister of Industry and Minerals Khaled Battal al-Najm described as a milestone for national development and local job creation.
At a press conference, al-Najm highlighted the country’s largest chemical production facility at the General Company for Petrochemical Industries. The complex will utilize modern membrane cell technology to produce 120 tonnes of caustic soda, 106 tonnes of liquid chlorine, 185 tonnes of hydrochloric acid, and 150 tonnes of sodium hypochlorite per day.
He emphasized the facility’s role in supporting vital sectors such as oil, water treatment, and manufacturing, while also creating employment opportunities for Basra residents. The project, he added, is part of a broader strategy to replace outdated plants with high-efficiency alternatives and meet public needs—particularly in drinking water sterilization.
In a separate development, the minister announced the launch of the Green Mountain Industrial City, Iraq’s first of its kind. The project is a collaboration between China’s Tsingshan Group and the General Company for Iron and Steel.
Spanning 2,000 dunams, the new industrial zone will host steel, construction material, and related manufacturing facilities, with modern infrastructure designed to support long-term industrial expansion.
According to al-Najm, the city marks a move toward integrated, sustainable manufacturing hubs that aim to boost Iraq’s industrial base, increase production capacity, and generate specialized employment.
