Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology has officially launched the dualisation works for the Izki–Nizwa Road — a key 32.2km infrastructure project in Dakhliyah Governorate.
The road, which starts at Qarut Roundabout in Izki, passes through Birkat al Mouz and ends in the Farkh area of Nizwa. The project is valued at approximately $122 million (RO 47 million).
The scope of work covers the construction of roundabouts, signalised intersections, and a vehicle underpass to improve traffic flow. Existing surface crossings will be replaced with box culverts to ensure safe passage during wadi overflows.
Salem bin Hamad al Jenaibi, Director of the Dakhliyah Roads Department, described the project as a vital upgrade for road safety and connectivity between key towns and wilayats, including Izki and Jabal Akhdar.
He noted that the improved route will facilitate the movement of agricultural and industrial goods, contributing to the governorate’s economic development.
Current works include mountain excavation, concrete lining of wadi channels, and road levelling. The new carriageway will feature barriers, signage, markings, reflectors, and lighting.
Other components include a dual carriageway connecting Izki’s city centre to Sultan Thuwayni bin Said Road, 3km of service roads, and rehabilitation of an 800m access road to Jabal Akhdar.
The ministry highlighted that the project will ease congestion in busy areas like Birkat al Mouz and Farkh, while supporting tourism, trade, and investment — in line with Oman’s national economic diversification strategy.
