Oman’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has initiated two dam projects in North Sharqiyah to boost groundwater levels and improve rainwater management.
The projects include a surface storage dam in Al Rashbi village (wilayat of Dima wa al Taiyyin) and a groundwater recharge dam in Quraisha village (wilayat of Wadi Bani Khalid).
According to Dr. Abdul Aziz bin Ali al Mashikhi, Director General of Agriculture and Water Resources in North Sharqiyah, the ministry is implementing various dam projects across Oman under three categories: groundwater recharge, flood protection, and surface storage.
“These projects help regulate natural water flow, replenish groundwater reserves, and mitigate flood risks,” Dr. Mashikhi said. “They also support rural agricultural development by ensuring reliable water supply.”
The Al Rashbi surface storage dam will have a capacity of 4,000 cubic metres and is being built. The Quraisha groundwater recharge dam will store up to 45,000 cubic metres. Both are scheduled for completion by April 2026.
“These dams will raise water levels in nearby wells and aflaj, enhance agricultural production, and help expand green cover across the region,” Dr. Mashikhi added.
Construction includes dam structure development, installation of cement supports and reinforcement in rocky terrain, spillway construction, control valves, and drainage systems. Additional protective measures will be implemented to prevent erosion and pipe blockages.
