Sidra Medicine, a member of Qatar Foundation, has launched a specialised eating disorders clinic within its Adolescent Medicine programme, offering care for children and young people aged 8 to 17.
As the only comprehensive service of its kind in Qatar, the clinic addresses a growing health concern through holistic, multidisciplinary care tailored to the complex physical and mental health needs of adolescents. Its team includes pediatricians, psychologists, dietitians, and social workers trained in leading therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Eating Disorders (CBT-E) and Family-Based Therapy.
The clinic diagnoses and treats conditions including Anorexia Nervosa (restrictive and binge-purge types), Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), and related mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, trauma, and low self-esteem.
“Eating disorders are not simply about food or weight—they are complex mental health conditions with deep emotional and psychological roots,” said Dr Madeeha Kamal, Acting Division Chief of Adolescent Medicine, General Pediatrics, and Dermatology at Sidra Medicine. “Many young people hide their symptoms, which is why our clinic is committed to raising awareness and offering specialised care that combines medical, psychological, nutritional, and family support.”
A key feature of the programme is its integration of allied health professionals in every patient’s recovery. Dietitians provide tailored nutritional support, psychologists address underlying emotional issues, and social workers work closely with families to improve relationship dynamics and foster a supportive environment.
The programme also offers inpatient services for adolescents requiring round-the-clock care, with all patient management—both outpatient and inpatient—aligned with American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines.
Chair of Pediatric Medicine, Dr Al Hammadi, noted that the clinic has witnessed many success stories, with more than 90% of patients achieving long-term recovery. “With comprehensive treatment and strong family involvement, adolescents can regain their health and lead fulfilling lives,” he said.
Physicians at Sidra Medicine emphasise the importance of early detection, balanced nutrition, and family meals to promote healthy growth, emotional well-being, and open communication. Parents concerned about their child’s eating habits are encouraged to seek professional support as early as possible, as timely intervention can make a significant difference in recovery outcomes.
