Oman’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has unveiled plans to construct 18 groundwater recharge dams across A’Dhahirah Governorate, as part of a community partnership initiative, according to a report by Oman News Agency (ONA).
The project aims to enhance groundwater reserves and ensure long-term water sustainability for future generations. The initiative reflects growing community engagement in collaborative water resource management.
Local citizens in the wilayats of A’Dhahirah have joined efforts with the Ministry to implement the project, with funding contributions coming from both the government and the community. The Ministry will cover 20% of the costs, while the remaining 80% will be financed by citizens, according to ONA.
Eng. Mubarak Salim Al Jabri, Director of the Water Resources Department in A’Dhahirah, stated that construction is currently underway for seven dams, including three each in the wilayats of Ibri and Yanqul, and one in Dhank.
Al Jabri noted that A’Dhahirah Governorate currently has 36 dams, evenly split between government-funded and community-funded structures—18 of each. In addition, maintenance work on eight existing dams was completed earlier this year.
The new dams are expected to strengthen Oman’s efforts in sustainable water management, especially in regions prone to water scarcity.
