The General Company for Iraqi Ports has announced that the first phase of Faw Port development has been completed after finishing 70% of the eastern breakwater. Iraqi Ports director Omran Radi said that around 5.8 km from a total of 8 km, estimated at 70% of the project is completed.
He also explained that the project will be completed as scheduled at the end of 2014 and works will start on the western breakwater to determine the shape of the Faw port later."
He further stated that "high waves on the north side of the Gulf forced the Greek company to use 5 tons of block rocks imported from Ras Al Khaimah in United Arab Emirates."
it’s worth mentioning that foundations of the new port of Faw was laid by the Ministry of Transportation back in 2011. It has been also reported that the port of Faw will be connected to the railway linking the Gulf countries to northern Europe through Turkey via Iraqi ports.
