Iraq has officially completed the first section of its landmark Development Road project and has begun the handover procedures, according to the General Company for Ports.
Speaking to Shafaq News, Company Director Farhan Al-Fartousi stated that the completed stretch includes three lanes designed specifically for heavy trucks and cargo transport.
“The first section of the road extends 51 kilometers from the Grand Al-Faw Port to the submerged tunnel, then continues 11 kilometers from the tunnel to the main Safwan road, bringing the total to 62 kilometers,” he explained.
This segment also features two major bridges, one measuring 805 meters and the other 300 meters. The road is equipped with a solar-powered lighting system installed by Samsung, reflecting the project’s emphasis on sustainability and advanced infrastructure.
In a related development, Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloglu announced last month that Turkey and Iraq are close to finalizing a bilateral agreement on the Development Road project.
The Grand Al-Faw Port, a key pillar of the project, is located on the Al-Faw Peninsula in Basra province and aims to transform Iraq into a regional trade corridor by linking the country to international transport routes. The $4.6 billion megaproject covers 54 square kilometers and is designed to handle up to 99 million tons of cargo annually, placing it among the largest ports in the Gulf and the tenth largest globally.
