Iraq is advancing its renewable energy transition by launching a large-scale program to install solar systems in government buildings—an effort aimed at enhancing energy reliability and easing pressure on the national grid.
The Ministry of Electricity confirmed that the first phase is underway, targeting the conversion of 534 buildings—including ministries, universities, schools, private banks, and healthcare facilities—to solar power by 2026.
To support this shift, 24 specialized companies have been selected to supply and install solar equipment, backed by financial incentives from donor banks encouraging broader adoption among citizens and farmers.
While technical and commercial proposals are under review, the government is preparing for additional phases that will extend solar installations to thousands more buildings nationwide.
As part of its sustainability goals, Iraq plans to convert around 6,000 federal buildings into eco-friendly facilities. The Ministry of Planning has also announced its upcoming solar rollout in coordination with other ministries.
