Dhofar Municipality is advancing a series of major infrastructure projects worth over $93 million, aimed at upgrading internal roads and dual carriageways across the governorate, in line with Oman Vision 2040’s focus on sustainable development.
Spanning more than 300 km of roadworks, the projects are part of the Sustainable Governorates and Cities Development Programme, designed to improve mobility, enhance safety, and support the region’s urban and economic expansion. The initiative seeks to deliver higher quality road services for residents, citizens, and visitors alike.
According to Dhofar Municipality officials, construction and paving works have been completed or are ongoing in key areas including Salalah, Taqah, Mirbat, Sadah, Shaleem and the Hallaniyat Islands, Thumrait, Muqshin, Al Mazyouna, Rakhyut, and Dalkhut. The projects are being executed to rigorous technical and safety standards, with a focus on infrastructure durability.
Salalah alone is witnessing the development of 161 km of internal roads, both in plains and mountainous areas, with investments exceeding $23 million, according to Ahmed bin Mohsen al Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality. The municipality is also working on the dualisation of a 9 km stretch of Sultan Qaboos Street, with works 22% complete, at a cost of around $42 million.
In Thumrait, 40 km of internal roads are being paved alongside the dualisation of a 4.5 km section of Thumrait Street — a combined investment of over $7.8 million, including decorative lighting.
Taqah is seeing 32 km of new roads at a cost of approximately $4.4 million, while Mirbat will have 20 km of paved roads built for around $2.6 million. Additionally, a 3.5 km section of Mirbat Street is scheduled for dualisation this year at a cost of $5.1 million.
Other road projects include 50 km in Sadah and 15 km in Muqshin, with works ongoing across multiple wilayats.
Ghassani affirmed that these infrastructure initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to projects that directly benefit citizens and promote balanced development throughout Dhofar. He also stressed the municipality’s proactive engagement with local communities to align services with their needs and maximize the impact of municipal plans.
