Oman has signed an agreement for a major agricultural project in Thumrait, aimed at cultivating moringa trees and manufacturing byproducts to enhance food security, promote sustainability, and diversify exports.
The usufruct contract — covering 10.5 million sqm in the Hanfit area — was signed between the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources. The project, led by Trufud, involves an investment of over $13.7 million.
The signing ceremony was attended by H H Sayyid Marwan bin Turki al Said, Governor of Dhofar; H E Dr Khalfan bin Said al Shuaili, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning; H E Dr Saud bin Hamoud al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources; along with Trufud representatives.
This flagship initiative integrates agriculture, manufacturing, and supply chains, in line with Oman’s strategy for sustainable agricultural investment and food security enhancement. It is expected to generate $10.4–13 million in annual export revenues from moringa-based products destined for North America, Europe, and Asia.
The project will also create over 500 direct jobs, with additional employment opportunities in logistics, packaging, and supply services — contributing to Dhofar’s economic development.
Known for its nutritional and medicinal benefits, moringa will be processed into oils and powders used in health products. Environmentally, planting 15 million moringa trees is projected to absorb over 400,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, adding a significant sustainability impact.
