The Sultanate of Oman has surpassed $2.4 billion in road infrastructure spending since the launch of its Tenth Five-Year Development Plan, according to the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology.
The ministry has announced plans to proceed with several new dual carriageway projects, building on the completion of major national highways connecting key governorates. Most recently, the dualization of Sultan Said bin Taimur Road, stretching 400 kilometers, was completed—now the longest dual carriageway in the country.
Eng. Khamis bin Mohammed Al Shamakhi, Undersecretary for Transport, stated that the ministry’s focus in the upcoming period will be on both finalizing current projects and launching newly approved ones. Some are in the final stages of the tendering process, while others are being prepared for award.
Among the most significant projects is the dualization of the central Ibra road in North Al Sharqiyah Governorate, as well as design work on a route connecting Sultan Turki bin Said Road through Al Mudhaibi to Sinaw.
The ministry is also finalizing procedures for Phase 1 of the Empty Quarter Road dualization in Al Dhahirah Governorate, and work continues on Phase 1 of the Al Buraimi–Mahdah dual carriageway, a stretch of 11 kilometers.
Ongoing works include remaining segments of Sultan Said bin Taimur Road between Adam and Haima, and various projects across Dhofar Governorate, such as:
Dualization from Raysut to Al Mughsayl
Al Mughsayl Bridge
Itin Tunnel
Dualization of Al-Farooq Street and Sultan Taimur Street
Asphalt road network development in Maqshan
In Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, the ministry is implementing the Jabal Shams Road project and the dualization of the Izki–Nizwa road (Garout South – Birkat Al Mouz – Firq).
The dualization of the Al Kamil Wal Wafi – Jalan Bani Bu Hassan – Jalan Bani Bu Ali road in South Al Sharqiyah is currently in the bid evaluation stage, based on the agreed final scope with relevant authorities.
Meanwhile, progress on the Al Kamil–Sur road has reached 46%, and Sultan Faisal bin Turki Road has passed the 44% mark.
In 2024, the Ministry awarded road contracts valued at over $1.17 billion, and the 2025 figure is expected to exceed $1.56 billion. Since the beginning of the Tenth Plan, road project investments have totaled more than $2.39 billion.
Work also continues on internal road links connecting main highways, including:
A link between the Al Musan’ah (Al Shu’aiba) roundabout
Completion of the Sohar connector to the Al Batinah Expressway, which is expected to be tendered this year
Additional linkages and supplementary works are ongoing on Sultan Turki bin Said Road and Al Batinah Expressway.
The ministry is also conducting extensive road maintenance across the Sultanate, including major works on Sultan Thuwaini bin Said Road between Bidbid and Nizwa.
Oman currently has over 33,000 kilometers of roads under ministry supervision—of which approximately 16,000 km are paved and 17,000 km are unpaved.
