Foreign workers have remitted from here an astronomical $60bn overseas in the past seven years — between 2006 and 2012, according to Qatar Chamber, the representative body of the private sector which is the largest employer of the foreign workforce.
Qatar Chamber said in its annual report for 2012 that some 54 percent of the workers' remittances of $60bn were routed to Asian countries, followed by Arab nations that accounted for nearly half that volume (28 percent).
India was the top destination of the remittances, followed by the Philippines, while the US, Egypt and the neighboring UAE trailed, Al Sharq reported, saying that the Chamber cited IMF figures in its annual report.
