Qatar’s General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has opened bidding for a contract to upgrade the Ras Laffan C substation. The project includes upgrades to existing 220kV and 400kV substations, the installation of new 220kV gas-insulated switchgear bays, and the addition of an 800-megavolt amps transformer.
The tender, issued on 15 October, has a bid submission deadline of 28 November, with a bid bond set at QR1.5m ($410,000).
Additionally, Kahramaa is soliciting bids for another contract involving the supply, installation, and commissioning of power transmission and distribution equipment, including substation earthing. This contract requires a QR3m bid bond, and proposals are due by 14 November.
Kahramaa is also negotiating with Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation to develop and operate the 2,300MW Facility E independent water and power producer (IWPP) project, which includes a water desalination capacity of 100 million imperial gallons daily.
Qatar’s energy infrastructure is expanding further, with the Qatar Electricity & Water Company announcing plans to develop a 500MW power unit in Ras Abu Fontas, and ongoing construction of two solar farms in Mesaieed and Ras Laffan, totaling 875MW capacity.
